All servers in my academic lab are either based on Debian Sid or the latest Long-Term-Support (LTS) release of the Ubuntu Server. Both of them use the Linux Kernel and offer a solid foundation for cybersecurity.
Ubuntu LTS Server Operating System
LTS stands for Long Term Support. At the time of writing, the codename of Ubuntu's latest server is Jammy Jellyfish and its version is 22.04. The proof-of-concept server at Pandit.Tech is based on Jammy. It came out only a month ago and I am very happy with the experiment so far.
Debian Sid aka Debian 'unstable'
Debian Sid helps me build stuff on the bleeding edge. However, it is also 'unstable' and therefore may not suit the faint hearted. It is best for short experiments when you wish to use the latest versions of the software and Linux Kernel that are not yet available in Ubuntu LTS.
